The R&D expert discusses her brand's unique survey on overall lip health presented at IDS, what's in the pipeline and the biggest challenges formulators face in today's market.
Burt’s Bees Head of Clinical & Scientific Affairs, Hemali Gunt, PhD, joined Happi to talk about the natural skincare brand’s commitment to lip health, its presence at this year’s Integrative Dermatology Symposium (IDS), and the challenges skincare formulators face in today’s market.
At IDS 2024, Burt’s Bees presented a first-of-its-kind survey on overall lip health among allied healthcare professionals designed to assess the importance of lip health features as measured using a 5-point Likert scale. The research, conducted in partnership with Dr. Raja Sivamani, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Integrative Skin Science and Research and UC Davis, in California, and the LearnSkin team, identified lack of lip dryness, lip smoothness, and even tone or lack of hyperpigmentation, as the top features most associated with healthy lips. The research can be found in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
Burt’s Bees, which is part of The Clorox Company, also presented data on how a nature-based mild cleanser can be used safely as a daily skin care routine in clinically sensitive skin, as well as serve as an adjunct to topical therapy without disrupting the skin microbiome. Tolerability and effectiveness of the cleanser were studied in female subjects with active rosacea and who were on topical metronidazole treatment. The systematic evaluation, which leveraged validated protocols like FCAT for mildness and tolerability in clinically sensitive skin population, showed Burt’s Bees Gentle Cream Cleanser delicately balanced skin hygiene without stratum corneum barrier damage. Results demonstrated the ability of nature-based cleansers to have profound dermatologic implications and serve as an adjunct therapy
